"U Say" by Goldlink ft. Tyler, the Creator and Jay Prince (Review)
It's time for a review of the new Goldlink track "U Say" featuring Tyler the Creator and Jay Prince.
This track dropped June 6, 2019 a few days after the news broke that Goldlink would be going on tour with Tyler, the Creator for the IGOR tour. We knew a track would be in the works after that announcement. Now after a few days we finally got it! I was genuinely excited about this collab because I am a fan of both of these artists but I have to say I'm a little disappointed of the product of this collab. This song has a summertime mood to it with the fun conga drums that open the track to the nice bass line throughout the song. The instrumental is a fun jazzy/hip hop beat that has a dance feeling to it. Goldlink comes in with a verse about a girl he has met that he is infatuated with but does not want to commit to the girl with the line "wanna love you but I do not wanna commit". Goldlink continues this fling with the girl and they leave the party they are at. The chorus comes in with lyrics like "you say wanna, party, all day you say you needed lovin' from me" "you say,you needed so why waste time?" These lyrics hint at Goldlink wanting to get into a relationship with the person he mentioned in his verse and asking "Why waste time?" not being in a relationship. After the chorus we have Tyler, the Creator deliver the best verse out of the two artist. Tyler in his verse talks about a love interest that has a boyfriend with lines "Your boyfriend pissed off, Smackin' his lips off, The fact my lips are covered in your lip gloss" These lines tell us that Tyler and this love interest is pretty serious and Tyler wants this person to break up with their boyfriend to be with Tyler. Then in the middle of Tyler's verse he comes to a realization of this fling and says "And you ain't even my type, I'm all bark no bite, I'm so sorry, wasted time, I wasted time". But at the end of his verse he comes back to the person because he's so "in love with them". This song does have a story line that resembles some of the songs off of Tyler's IGOR album but there is some flaws with the song. The first flaw is that both artist does not perform to their full potential. It feels like both artist slacked off and wanted to get a track out that could be played on the IGOR tour. The second flaw is that this whole song feels rushed. The song has a weak hook and Goldlinks verse is not as lyrical as some of his other performances. Overall this is a decent track, I could see myself playing this a couple more times throughout the summer but not a song I would have on repeat.
